FFRMas 2016: Day 2

On the second day of Christmas, FFRMas gave to me…
…a Kurorak bootleg.
Bootlegs are pretty neat. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term, bootleg remixes typically feature artists that take an original track, and remix it using samples contained within the track itself: that is, they don’t have access to the raw stems and samples used as components in the song. In this case, quickly-resident-to-be artist Kurorak took apart the original electronic/liquid trap version of the song produced by Damien (check it out here: it’s pretty good) and ramped the speed up a noticeable bit.
For those of you not aware: the alternating colors of the banner are not just for decoration. Red banners are reserved for releases that are substantially less accessible to the community — this chart’s pretty nasty. Jacks, bursts, heavy layering — if you don’t have finger independence: gooooooood luck.
cold (Kurorak’s Bootleg)

Song Genre: Dance 2
Style: Liquid IDM Remix

FFRMas 2016: Day 1

On the first day of Christmas, FFRMas gave to me…
…an short song chock full of memes.
Major League Can Can
Musician: MajorLeagueWobs
Step Artist: ilikexd
Song Genre: Dance 2
Style: Meme Medley
Difficulty: 68
Song Length: 1:18
FFRMas Day 1 is Major League Can Can, by MajorLeagueWobs – a very short medley that serves as a barrage of the dankest of memes of the past yester(timeperiod), all complemented by (or complmenting?) the (in)famous Offenbach melody that we know and maybe love.
Spontaneous contest: Post a screenshot of a score on Major League Can Can with 420 of a given judgment (amazing + perfect, good, average, miss, or boo) while passing in the front page post comments within 24 hours of this release, and I’ll give you 4,200 credits. If you’re able to get two judgments with counts of 420, I’ll up your prize to 10,000 credits. Happy smashing!

FFRMas Graphic Design Spon Con!
As per tradition, FFRMas is upon us, and we will start seeing releases for that event starting on the 14th of this month! There will be front page posts for each individual day’s release. To accompany them, I had the intent of adding a banner on the top of each post, similar to the size of the Site Update posts. Because of the way the event is laid out, there would be two different images, alternating for odd and even days, as every two file releases alternate between a more accessible file for the community (an “easier” file), and one that’s quite difficult (a hard file). While I can do this myself, I have no doubt in my mind that there are others in the community who could do a better job than I could. So, why not give users the opportunity to gain something out of it?
Rules
- To be eligible for the prize of this event, you have to submit two banners at a size of 610 x 110.
- Both banners should be related to one another, to easily distinguish from easier/harder releases. An example of this would be a green/red pairing, for easier and harder releases, respectively.
- The banner designs need to have some sort of text that tells us that they’re for FFRMas, as well as the day that they’re a part of.

November 2016 Game Updates

A little bit later into the month then I expected, but regardless, I’m pleased to release one of the largest R^3 engine updates in years past, including Song Filters, Song Ratings, more options, many quality of life changes, bug fixes, and new features.
It should be noted you may be required to clear you cache as this update includes changes that may prevent the game from loading if not done so.
Song Filters
Starting off with the biggest and most likely the nicest of new additions is the brand new Filter Manager, a method of selecting only the songs you want to see based on the rules you set.
Song filters work in the same way the old difficulty filter worked in previous editions of R^3, the biggest change now is that it isn’t just limited to a single rule. Rules can be based on nearly every bit of song info and can be combined with the AND and OR to create rule subsets. These rule subsets allow you to create filters that can be extremely broad or very focused.
Filters created in the filter manager are saved within your profile, allowing you to quickly enable or disable filters as you need.
Current Filter Rules:
| AND | OR |
This feature can be found within the Search Tab on the song selection screen. This also retires the old difficulty filter system that used to exist as it’s functionality exists within the new filter system.
Song Ratings
Song ratings are a way of showing your love for a song by allowing you to rate the song on a scale of 1-5, with your score also going towards the songs overall average rating.
The method of rating songs happens on the game results screen after you’ve completed at least 95% of a songs total length. Once this requirement has been passed, a small star will appear next to the song title, and upon clicking it will bring up the area to rate it.
Song ratings can be combined with the new song filters as well, allowing you to find songs you personally like, or hide the ones you don’t. You can also use the filters with the global song rating to find exceptional songs as rated by the community.
Quality of Life Changes
- Game Options:
- Added color options to change the overall look of the game.
- Changed the volume slider to allow up to 125%.
- Game volume will now save with your settings.
- Added reset buttons on color options.
- Only show new judge mode when FPS is 30.
- Game Loading:
- Loading the initial game scripts can now properly handle failure, and are more stable against invalid or incomplete loads.
- A retry button has been added to the initial loading screen to retry game scripts that fail to load.
- Song Selection:
- The ability to change the genre list from either Genres, Difficulties, or Song Flags.
- The global song rating has been added into the song info tab, showing it’s rating from 1-5.
- A much improved search tool has been added to allow searching of [Song Name, Artist, Stepartist, Style].
- The Filter tab has been merged into the Search tab, as the filter functionality only required a single button on the UI.
- Random Song follows the same rules as the current filter.
- Song names will now use as much space as possible before resorting to text resizing.
- Song Difficulties now fit when above 99.
- Improved performance when changing genres, using filters, or searching.
- Allow up to 20 pages on a regular genre, and 16 pages on All or search, effectively allowing up to 8000 songs before possible UI issues.
- Removal of Friends tab, along with the loading of them as well. This was a rarely used feature that mostly increased overall loading time with little gain.
- Song Loading:
- Song Loading now contains details [Size Loaded, Size Total] about the file loading.
- Now contains a cancel button if the song is loading slow or you changed your mind.
- Will now go back to the song selection screen in the event of a song load failure instead of softlocking.
- Game Play:
- FFRorbular, a noteskin from R^2, has been remade and added to the game.
- A Display option for “Score” has been added allowing you to hide the score during gameplay, it has also been changed to allow itself to be moved around the screen like other gameplay elements.
- A Display option for hiding the Gameplay Top and Bottom bars has been added to remove them from view if you so choose.
- Combo Colors can now be altered in the options menu for the normal, Full Combo, and AAA state.
- Note colors can now be changed to other note colors.
- Added Rotate CW and Rotate CCW visual mods. This modifier rotates the receptors and game notes permanently. Can be used in combination with left/right scroll to resemble the legacy scroll mod. – PrawnSkunk
Bug Fixes
This list contains bugs squashed since the last site update.
- R^3:
- Corruption of user settings if a song queue or any setting contains a backslash, preventing the game engine from loading.
- Highscores still display scores and ranks based on combo scoring.
- Dropdown selectors uses a really small font.
- Dropdown can appear offstage if it appears near the bottom of the screen.
- Mousewheel can effect scrollpanes that aren’t normally scrollable.
- Tornado Mod doesn’t correctly factor in receptor spacing.
- Numpad keys can be used in addition to the user set keys.
- Song BooFlags don’t seem to work correctly.
- Matching a score causes the time to be updated, making highscore AAA not first come first serve.
- Legacy + Velocity:
- Playlist displaying the wrong token unlocks.
- Site:
- Twitch Streams aren’t working.
- Song Color scale isn’t changed for the 120 scale.
- Playlist loading isn’t optimized.
- Leaderboards AAA Equivalency isn’t clamped and displays values < 0.
- Leaderboards Advance stats for Notes Hit display as 0.
- Player Replays show blank song when looking at list.
- Profile Friends usernames were all lowercase.
- Unable to click “Manage” on friends when in profile style mode.
- Latest post on profiles displays the incorrect date.
- FFR Most Played isn’t displaying anything.
- Incorrect link to Multiplayer Ranks on the Daily Stats Page.
- LevelRank Special always shows “Unable to find username.”
- All LevelRank pages have validation issues.
- Velocity was incorrectly set as Retired Staff member.
With Love,
- Velocity, with additions from PrawnSkunk.
With a thank you to the Development team and FFR staff for beta testing the update. <3

Submission Rules/Guidelines Addendum

Hey there, everyone! With the November/December batch period beginning, we wanted to introduce and familiarize simfile artists with rule changes regarding file submissions. These new changes and additions are put into place for the purpose of improving clarity within some ambiguous areas of the file submission process, as well as tying up some loose issues that we have been seeing over the past few years.
Click here to read the changes, or click the image above to go to the Rules/Submission Guidelines thread and join the conversation.
