Many are using Nintendo’s Brain Age game to boost their brain power.
Here are two more powerful tools, however, you can add to your brain
gym:

* Dance Dance Revolution
* In the Groove

Both are music video games that may improve your ability to
concentrate as well as increase your intelligence. The research that
supports this view basically comes from the work done with Synchronized
Metronome Tapping (SMT), a technique that seeks to develop the rhythm and timing circuitry of the brain.

Rhythm and Timing involves multiple brain regions such as the:

* cerebellum
* basal ganglia
* frontal lobes
* thalamus
* motor cortex
* temporal lobes
* sensory cortex
* corpus callosum

Additionally, the crucial neural pathways that interconnect these structures and enable them to communicate with each other are also invoked.

Importantly, several scientific studies have been published on the beneficial effects of SMT; these include:

* A recent exploratory study presented at the learning & Brain
Conference at Harvard in 2005 revealed that SMT treatment resulted in a
7-20% greater growth in reading and math achievement
* A study involving 9 to 12 year old boys diagnosed with ADHD showed significant patterns of improvement in attention, coordination, reading and language processing
* A study involving 1500 middle and high school students showed significant increases in reading fluency and math fluency
* A study of 360 9th and 10th graders showed higher scores in
broad reading, reading fluency, and math calculation skills. Math
fluency and attention also improved significantly.

Thoughts or opinions on the subject? I searched the forums to find any related posts and could not so I figure I would approach the topic. I feel that my concentration has improved only after a short time on FFR. I wonder if any of you have felt the same. If you can bring any other scientific facts to the table that would also be appreciated.

I think the exact opposite happened to me. I can't concentrate on much now except for FFR, ITG, any rhythm based game, etc. . .

I 100% agree on this. Now I have a reason to tell my parents I'm not getting any retarded'er but smarter. Besides, video games increased my vocabulary during all these years and FFR has helped me with my reflexes and reaction timing.

They said DDR and ITG, not FFR/SM/GH, those aren't as physical and have slightly different affects, do go jumping to conclusions about all rhythm games.

FFR is still very similar to DDR/ITG, but to be honest, I still don't think that DDR can have a 20% improvement in reading and math.

I recently watched a documentary on TV that said that all those "scientific studies" aren't really serious ones. On top of that, as I spend a lot of time playing FFR as well as other rythm games, then I should be some kind of genius by now!! But I'm not.

Playing that kind of game might somehow make it easier to learn for some people, but I know some people who play(ed) as much as I do and who got the worst marks ever at school, because they did not study. You wanna get better at reading? Then read more. You suck at math? Then do more exercices! There's no such simple answer as "playing rythm games will make you smarter". I so wish it were true, though .

Well obviously just playing the game won't increase your intelligence. The study outlines the research that believes playing these types of games improve your ability to learn, retain, and process information better.

For me, I've actually done better remembering forumulas and functions in math in these past years playing FFR and DDR, although I'm already greatly skilled with those. So maybe this study has some truth in helping retain information and improving a person's mental capacity, even by a minor margin.
