phpBB vs Vbulletin
Ok, so here is the deal.
I have been running with phpbb2 for quite some time now and I am really sick and tired of all the security holes. What makes it worse is that I am running a postnuke to phpbb package called PNphpBB and it has a "special" modified version of phpbb that is usually a few (or many) versions behind the normal phpbb release. So... I have taken the initiative to purchase Vbulletin (not cheap) and have been spending late nights practicing transfers over to vbulletin. This is not easy when you consider over 7000 attachments, 100,000 forum members and nearly half a million posts. Each "test import" takes about 5 hours to complete. Please remember that this does not change the whole site, vbulletin is ONLY for the forums. The good news is that I was able to transfer everything intact.. threads, posts, sections, permissions, avatars, attachments. If I were to make the transfer tonight, there are 2 things that would need to change. 1) You will have to login with your FFR login/pass once on the forums and then never again as long as you don't clear those cookies 2) I would need to change the look of the forums Other than that, Vbulletin has about a zillion more features than phpBB and is quicker to search through. Thoughts? Cheers, Synthlight p.s. I will rid us of that nasty loading bar tonight no matter what. |

Re: phpBB vs Vbulletin
I've already said this to you in private but I suppoose it's worth making public.
bjstrattonIM: The BMS 7.0 interface is bleh bjstrattonIM: And it uses vBulletin bjstrattonIM: vBulletin has some benefits over phpBB from the administrative perspective bjstrattonIM: But the phpBB user interface is better EDIT: By saying "the 7.0 interface is bleh" I mean the forums themselves. The extra BMS-exclusive stuff is done really nicely, I'm not commenting on that at all.

I've seen some vbulletin and it looks fine.
So long as all posts/things like that remain, I am fully behind a switch.

Re: phpBB vs Vbulletin
I kinda like how Vbulletin lays everything out, and of course we can always customize it.
I think you'll all like the new stuff :P

Re: phpBB vs Vbulletin
Go for it. Phpbb is out of date and full of security compromises.

Re: phpBB vs Vbulletin
Personally, I love how phpBB works and looks, but you do what's best. Security holes certainly aren't cool.

Guido: I think many people will be supprised with VBulletin, just playing around with some of the settings shows many promissing features.

Re: phpBB vs Vbulletin
I've always loved how phpBB looks. It's something I've liked for many years. If you guys want to switch to vbulletin go ahead.
Just remind me what vbulletin looks like, it's like Arch0wl's forums right? |

Re: phpBB vs Vbulletin
vBulletin is amazing. I am the only user whose opinion matters. Switch. Now. It totally destroys every other forum software.
Also, Kilga: You are FUCKING BLIND. The 7.0 forums look AMAZINGLY good, far, far, far, far better than ANY phpBB SHIT. Seriously dude. What the hell is wrong with you? O_o |

What do you want thoughts about? What we think doesn't matter, you've made the decision already.

I like how Moogy comes in and says that he's the only one who is worthy of an opinion on the topic, even though everyone agrees with him.

Re: phpBB vs Vbulletin
Because I was asked by Synth over AIM what I thought of phpBB vs. vBulletin. It would have been rude to simply ignore him.
I suppose this is what I get for not reading the topic. The way he talked over AIM and the title of this topic made me think that we were going to discuss the pros and cons of each and then pick one based on public opinion. My bad. EDIT: First line is @ Jello
