Any direction I should be going in?
I'm new to StepMania. I downloaded the latest version of StepMania 5, picked up the ultralight theme, bumped my speed to c500 for starters, set my arrows to delta and distant, and put my keys to a DFJK spread. I'm all set in that regard. As for songs, however –
–*I downloaded the recent StepMania Stepping Stones pack. I'm going through all of the songs with "Novice" difficulties right now because holy hell are some of the Easy difficulties hard for me at the moment. I'm asking what I should be doing to gradually improve. Should I AAA all the novice songs before starting to move on to the Easy ones, then Medium, etc? Is there a better song pack I should be using for just starting out? FFR has a bit of direction with all of the song levels where you can just slowly work your way up, but I'm a little lost because StepMania seems so delightfully limitless and open. Thanks! |

I think you will improve faster by playing songs that are too difficult to full combo. Keep doing that and eventually once you go back you will be very good at easier songs.

Re: Any direction I should be going in?
I'd bump up your speed mod a bit if you're using distant. Unless it's comfortable for you right now, then that's still fine.
Keep playing songs that are harder than what you can handle. Always push yourself a bit. If you don't push yourself, you're gonna have a harder time improving. Just keep at it, is all I can say. Otaku's Dream Anime packs are usually what new/not good players play in. You can check out the pack list and download whatever packs you feel would have easier files.

I figured as much, thank you. I will begin to push myself more on the Easy songs, and check out those other packs as well. I'll also try c600 and see how that goes. I'm using distant because I saw that quite a few people do in that SM bragging thread.

Re: Any direction I should be going in?
When I started I just kept playing FFR Community Pack songs and worked my way up to Nuclear Blast and etc. from there. Just download a bunch of stuff and keep playing, improvement is innevitable.

Re: Any direction I should be going in?
Thank you for your help. In hindsight this was a pretty dumb question to make a thread for -- of course I should just practice harder songs and work at it.
Really enjoying some of the songs! Really fun to play with my mechanical keyboard as well. |

If you attempt to AA songs that you could only A, you will eventually be able to AAA the songs you could AA.
