Massive tornadoes rip trough my city, surrounding cities
[quick edit: My location displayed on ffr says Joliet, although im actually from wilmington/coal city. Its just easier to say joliet.]
At around 11:30 am this morning, a massive storm rolled through my city. 30 minutes after the storm hit, the tornado sirens went off. My girlfriend and I took shelter in my bathroom seeing as I dont have a basement. You could hear the wind and debris hitting my house. It only lasted for about 5-10 minutes, but felt like hours. Once things calmed down, I looked outside to find lots of downed branches, and scattered debris. Nothing too serious, but it was pretty scary. There was no real damage to my house, or any other house on my block. Later I had found out that the tornado took out a restaurant in my neighborhood, along with gas stations, a tobacco store, and several other businesses. All these businesses were only around 7 minutes from my home. I was mere minutes away from the path of this massive tornado! Below are some pictures of the damage it caused. heres a link to a video of the same tornado that passed minutes from my house. here it moved north of me a bit, and I wasnt in any danger from its path anymore: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10202389496883830 and heres some of the aftermath: this was a sports bar. i was here with my girlfriend not long ago. a bedroom of a house completely exposed that hole is the basement of the house where the family took shelter. they had to climb through the ruble to get out... once they got out, this is what the saw my thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families. very sad.

relevant, probably
Seriously scary stuff. I have family in Southern IL, don't believe they were affected though aside from a few weather warnings.

IL is far from tornado alley, and this is far from normal area in November.
Relevant, but an EF-4 tornado struck New Minden, IL (this is an extremely rural area). |

That image of the wood scattered all over the ground where you can barely even SEE the ground is just unbelievable. There's nothing left. That's just it. Where a house once stood is now reduced to splinters. One of the most terrible natural disasters, I do hope people are getting help clearing out all the debris. Glad to hear you're okay, you've been a friend to me since day 1 on FFR pretty much.

Re: Massive tornadoes rip trough my city, surrounding cities
Preliminary reports are stating that this tornado was at least 3 miles wide...
While this tornado obviously isn't the strongest tornado on record, if preliminary reports turn out to be correct, then this tornado would break the record for the longest tornado ever on record. The previous record holder was the El Reno tornado that killed famous storm chaser Tim Samaras (rest his soul, he was a pioneer) at the end of May (280 MPH+ winds, yet this tornado was only rated an EF-3 due to how extremely minute the damage was... thinking about that still fucking enrages me) Last edited by TC_Halogen; 11-17-2013 at 09:22 PM.. |

Indeed they are. Glad you are okay man ^.^
I've seen my fair share of tornadoes as well not sure that I have personally encountered an EF-4 but even from what I've been in its not easy. That wind is some serious shit. Side note, did your house take any damage? |
