Which is more important in life?
Education or money?
Education is something that no one can take away from you and it will always be there when you need it. Money on the other hand, is essential to survive and without money you would not be able to afford an education. In my opinion, both of them go hand in hand, but there can only be one better choice. If you only had to choose one then which do you think will benefit you more? My choice would be education because I can use the knowledge that I gain to earn money, but there are slight technicalities involved. For example, in order for me to get an education I would need to get money first to pay for a college tuition. In this case money is essential to survive, right? I have a loophole in my theory. Let's say an individual gets a full time job at McDonalds and is on minimum wage. They save up their money and in three months they are able to afford a tuition at their nearest community college. Now they have the ability to get an education, but there is only problem, time. They have the job and they have the education but for them to excel in either of the two they would need to sacrifice one for the other. You need money to pay your rent, phone bill, transportation, and food. You need an education to gain the knowledge and skills required to attain a salaried job that can provide you with higher and better chances of survival. So it comes down to these options: education and money. What would you choose and why?

Re: Which is more important in life?
This is not a particularly useful question because we could just say "I choose money -- and then I'd buy education" or "I choose education -- and now I am smart enough to earn a lot of money."

You don't have to sacrifice one for the other. AJ and I are both going to college, both have a job, pay rent, utilities, etc, and are raising two children.

Re: Which is more important in life?
There's nothing to elaborate on in this case. As Marcus said, you can get money to pay for an education -- or, you can get an education (through means of the government) to get a good paying job for stability. This question doesn't allow for much discussion.
If you want to be as simple as possible on this question, the logical answer is money. Yes, you can live under primal circumstances and hunt for food/create shelter, etc, but you realistically need money to support yourself for living a normal lifestyle. Not having an education isn't detrimental to your state of being -- you could potentially survive without an education through lower-paying jobs in areas where housing is incredibly inexpensive, and still be able to pay for food/water/other necessities to survive. |

Education. You can learn outside of school. Life is a learning experience.
With that said, fuck university/college for now. |

Re: Which is more important in life?
I'll put it this way -- let's say you could only get one but without the other.
In this scenario, I'd pick money over education, easily. |

In most instances, you need education to get money and you need money to get education.
Kinda like you need a job to get experience and you need experience to get a job. It's part of the reason class mobility is at its lowest point in decades. In fact, here's a map of one measure of class mobility - http://onpoint.wbur.org/2013/07/23/upward-mobility |

Steal books? Infiltrate college classes? Scrounge for literature in the garbage bins? What means of access will you use to gain that knowledge? This is where money will need to come into play.

Re: Which is more important in life?
You need money to life.
You don't need education to life. Therefore Money > Education. I'm pretty sure even knowledge gets boring after a good chunk of years invested in it. It's useful, but it's not necessary to be happy. If you want to feel accomplished/satisfied, you don't need to be in love with your job, you can find a hobby that makes you happy too or focus your life on other things. As long as the income compensate what you need to pay, you're free to work on how you want to educate yourself. In fact, you may even have more freedom that way. If you're really smart and get that bachelor etc. etc. it's quite possible that you figure out that there's simply no demand for your interests and you're still in a bad situation. It's possible to be lucky, but the safest bet remains money imo. Last edited by Hakulyte; 10-4-2013 at 03:24 PM.. |

Re: Which is more important in life?
Now by education, do you mean formal education? Like in a classroom setting with teachers? Because like pseudo said, life is a learning experience, and that is far more valuable to me than money.

Re: Which is more important in life?
No matter how you slice it, not having money sucks. When you are poor, you're constantly in survival mode just trying to make ends meet. Being poor also means you have no buffer to protect yourself against unforeseen circumstances. You don't have much freedom/control/power over much in your life when you have to devote it to scraping by.

Re: Which is more important in life?
If you just had as much money as you ever needed then you'd never really need an education. Although that doesn't inherently mean you would just be stupid and unknowledgable about the world. You could teach yourself anything today if you felt like it.
So I don't think these two things are really comparable. Maybe something like "money or family or love" would be a harder question. Except not really because family and love should be more important. |

For example, without a consumer we cannot sell a product and without a product we cannot sell to a consumer therefore a consumer would not exist without the other, right? Or another example would be running a business. In order to run a successful business (employer) you need the help of other people (employees) to help you get the job done because you would not be able to manage doing everything by yourself. If you live alone then the same still applies to everything else I just said because you are still depending on the mailman to deliver your mail, you are still depending on the people who work for the trash company to come pick up the garbage that you leave on the lawn in the morning, you still depend on your employer to give you a paycheck every two weeks. People need each other in order to survive, so in your case if you are ever financially stuck in a pickle then you have AJ or other family to rely on until you get back on your feet. You still have your education and the money is there.

Yes. I do mean formal education or education that can prove to be of value for you in the future.
