Default What's your accent?

This last year or so I've become a lot more conscious of things that make us sound funny to people from different areas of the country. So I wanna know: what accent do you have?

http://www.youthink.com/quiz.cfm?act...ke&obj_id=9827

Here's my result: (It seems right)

Which American accent do you have?
Northern

You have a Northern accent. That could either be the Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo accent (easily recognizable) or the Western New England accent that news networks go for.

Says I have western. Which they say is kind of neutral. I'm guessing most people have this accent.

You`re not Northern, Southern, or Western, you`re just plain -American-. Your national identity is more important than your local identity, because you don`t really have a local identity. You might be from the region in that map, which is defined by this kind of accent, but you could easily not be. Or maybe you just moved around a lot growing up.

Sounds about right, I'm from Florida btw.

North Central

What people call the "Minnesota accent." Sounds almost Canadian. You may have even been asked if you were from Canada before.

From a past result I did years ago, I used have a "Minnesotan" accent as well. However, it makes more sense for me since I'm partially American. I say or pronounce some words in a Canadian fashion (e.g. "pop" instead of "soda"), while saying other things the American way (e.g. pronouncing "z" as "zee" instead of "zed").

Trying the quiz again, I apparently have a Western accent now. Whatever lol. Quiz is meh at best. However, living in the west, I wouldn't be surprised either if the result was remotely correct.

Western

Western is kind of neutral, but not quite since it`s still possible to tell where you`re from. So you might not actually be from the West (but you probably are). If you really want to sound "neutral," learn how to say "stock" and "stalk" differently
I do say stock and stalk slightly differently...

I don't really understand this test. These words have defined pronunciations and that is how I say them.

The words TENT and TINT. How do you typically say them when you are typically talking?
Like this one. How can these two words ever be pronounced the same? One has an "eh" sound and the other has an "iih" sound.

How do you say the first A in PASTA?

Same A as in MAT or CAT
Is anyone here able to say "pasta" like this? lol...

It surprised me a lot too... From what I've read, approximately half of the US doesn't differentiate between the vowels in words like "stock" and "stalk." Saying words like "pen" and "pin" the same way is characteristic of a southern accent. My roommate is from Missouri and he does this. I think saying pasta like "paahsta" is a new englander thing, like from NY or Boston.

That makes sense. Even though I've spent my whole life in Oregon, my family grew up mostly in Iowa, Minnesota, California, and Oklahoma.

I grew up in Oregon -- I don't really have an accent. People from the east coast though can apparently tell I am not from those parts.

I'm from Baltimore and I got Northern, but I've been told I have a bit of a country accent sometimes :/ when I don't pay attention, I guess I can hear that.
