Default Adding song to classic genre

Well since there isn't as many songs in the classic genre of FFR as other sections, maybe we can add another one. I wondering if that could be Rachmaninoff etude Op. 39 No. 6 "Little Red Riding Hood" by Sergei Rachmaninoff. It's pretty fast and could make a good VC. Just wanted to know if anyone would bother to get permission/ make stepfile.

if the song's over (50? 70? 75? 100?) years old it's in the public domain

(Just as a note, copyright NEVER expires based on the age of the work. It expires based on the number of years since the creator of the work died. If someone wrote a book when they were 10, and lived to be 120, the copyright woudln't expire until 50 (sometimes 70) years after they died, in that case, 160 years after the book itself was published)

Only if you find an original recording that is actually of Rachmaninoff, or his contemporaries. If you want to use a recent recording of a public domain song you still need permission from the recent performers. (Thus, a Boston Pops or London Symphony performance of his work from say, 2002, would still need their permission to use their version. Thus the request to convert it to midi format and use that)

But Sergai Rachmaninoff died in 1943 as a Russian...hmm...this'll take some research.

Wow, Russian copyright law in the case of this guy specifically is pretty awkward.

In the Soviet Union, copyright expired very quickly, something like 15 years after the death of the creator, which would put Rachmaninoff's work soundly in the public domain.

In 1993, (50 years after Rachmaninoff died) The Russian federation changed the law to "death+50 years" but with a 4-year extension to anybody who had lived during the Great patriotic War (Which he did) and applied it retroactively to anything that would have qualified had the law always existed (Thus actually re-applying copyright to many works that were at that time in the public domain)

So his Death+50 would have taken him to 1997. In 2004, the term was extended from 50 to 70 years retroactively, which would have put him to 2017 and still protected, except that it appears like the retroactivity only hit things that were still under copyright in 2004, not things that -would- have been under copyright were it 70 years all along.

To the best of my ability to discern, the various works of Sergei Rachmaninoff entered the public domain in 1997, and are fair game for FFR.

Midi to mp3 conversion is not difficult... just use SynthFont. Then you can slap a good piano sound on it as well, instead of whatever finale does. That's what I do, and my midi's sound good enough for FFR.

And Rachmaninoff is tough to step, since he often has multiple melodies simultaneously, so you'd be stepping a few things at once, which just makes a mess when you only have 4 arrows. Solo would be much more feasible, though.

Just gave op. 32 no. 6 a listen, it's not that steppable.

The most steppable work of his most likely the famous Op. 23 no. 5, G minor. Jacktastic, too. Maybe I'll make a midi of that. Hmm.
