I think I'm an idiot for trying too hard...
Where does one cross the line when doing community service? Does it happen when the person knowingly does bodily damage to oneself? Or does it happen when you set a hard to reach goal, and then almost complete it twice? Or is there something else?
Last night (6pm-6am) I was at DePaul's Relay for Life. First comment on that, Thanks again for last year, you know who you are . Second, after setting a pretty decent pace last year walking/running 20 miles last year, I decided to aim for that again this year. I knew this would be pretty easy if I were to walk the whole time as I only went for half the time last year and reached 20. I got my 20 miles at about 2:30, and then continued at my pace for the rest of the night. I don't know if it was because I had nothing better to do, or because I wanted to keep going, or just because, but I went on to almost making 40 miles. I stopped, thankfully, at 37 and 7/8 miles. I understand that this was for a good cause, but I can hardly walk, much less stand, due to all of the blisters all over my feet. Blah blah blah blah, I just walked about 38 miles for charity and my feet hurt, but that shouldn't really be a surprise. Last edited by PsYcHoZeRoSk8eR; 04-25-2009 at 07:31 AM.. I personally don't see what the problem is. Great life experience, I'd say.

Re: I think I'm an idiot for trying too hard...
I never understood how walkathons can be considered to be charitible service if you are the walker, no offense I hope.
Whoever is donating the money per mile someone else walks is the one donating to the charity. Perhaps they are even also trying to encourage a more active healthy lifestyle in the walkers as well. At best it is an indirect charitible service, unless you're also the one donating, in which case you could skip the walking altogether. To me, community service is more of a direct thing, like working at a soup kitchen or tutoring school children or catering to nursing home resident needs or cleaning up litter or similar type things. No offense, I hope, and congratulations on the long distance walked. That must be quite a personal accomplishment! I'd say to do this sort of thing more for a personal goal and betterment of self than for other reasons, although if someone else is also donating money to charity per mile you walk or ride a bike or such, that is an added benefit. |

My legs are fine, a little sore, but nothing I couldn't walk off. My feet are still killing me, I've got some terrible blisters.

Re: I think I'm an idiot for trying too hard...
Sounds like you should probably man up.
Okay, that sounds like a flaming statement, but just blisters? I know playing the compare-game isn't exactly the best line of logic but just be proud of what you've done, take a day of rest and stop complaining. Well, actually you're probably on FFR because you're a nerd. And I know us nerds don't like to move, in which case you should probably take some time and play some video games while icing your feet. Be proud, but shh. Blisters aren't that bad.

I never got why people had to do things like that for charity.

Maybe you should have stopped when you started getting blisters?
I mean, I can appreciate what you did and how you raised money, but unless the charity is literally DESPERATE for donations, I would not say you need to worry about hem having enough donations. =/ |

Re: I think I'm an idiot for trying too hard...
You're supposed to wear blister paddings and when you feel them coming use bandages. It isn't hard to prevent getting them. I'm a runner, and I'm sure you have experience too. No excuse for that.

Anyway, 38 miles... wow. After 5 miles of walking I need a break. And besides, after all that walking, I don't care how much water you had, you'd be really dehydrated. x_x;;
