Default Shadowcliff's Portfolio

Update
New siggy added

Hi!
I'm a Gimp user.
This is where I'll dump all of my digital artwork from my very first to most recent creation, for all to view and criticize.
Actually, if you view this thread, PLEASE view and criticize.
Check back often, as I will be updating this a lot as I progress.
Thank you.

First EVER attempt, not posted before

(eh, crappy)

First posted attempt using tutorial

(turned out quite nicely, I suppose)

Some requests for friends, as practice for me. No tutorials used.

Current favorite

(I used only the sparks brush, the rest is polar coordinates, motion blur, flame renders and layer settings :/)

(I like this one! It's kinda big, though)

Using
,
I made
.

That's it for now, all in the exact order I made them.
Critique wanted; I aim to get better at graphic design.
Also give me any helpful links for Gimp tutorials, brushes, etc.
Thanks again!

Oh, and all saved as .png's, for quality's sake.

I like what you've done with the fonts. Probably just because I don't know how to do it myself. As for the effects, I hate it. It looks flashy.. but, the purple and blue ones.. Eh. I just don't personally like them. They look like they're done way to simply. In all honesty, I like the one you posted the first time the best.

But, I'm not just going to be so negative. I do like the layering you did with all of them. Especially the dog one. It's cool how you made sure we could still see the dog, but it was nice and flashy at the same time. Try fooling around a bit more on your own, I like where you're going with this stuff. :]

Thanks! I like constructive criticism.
The only thing I want to change with the dog it putting the text and the paint splash thing behind the dog, but it was my first attempt at cropping and pasting items. I anchored the dog layer to the image, and it merged with the background, causing me to not be able to put the text behind the dog. I didn't think about that then, but I might redo it later.

This is exactly why you should get photoshop. Even the highest standard in gimp, is ass in photoshop.

Yeah, except we have morals.
Gimp does compete with Photoshop, how can you say it's crap? It has all the same tools, it's just ordered differently than you're used to. I'm sticking with Gimp, I don't care what you say.
If your arguement was in any way commenting on the work I've posted above, then keep in mind I'm still a beginner.
I can show you people who make graphics with Gimp that are 10x better than syzergy or me.

(I'm adding a new image, it's a background I just made)

RZR, I got the dog from an image on google, cropped it, then pasted it on the background.

I liked the empty space large canvas work--that one is easily the best.

I agree. The last picture is much better than the others. Stick with large scale, and don't ever, ever, ever go back. It is much easier to make quality items at a larger scale, and then shrink them later on, don't ever work at the scale that the final product will be.

And there is still a monstrous gap between the best GIMP users and the best Photoshop users. You have no argument there.

Well, it's sorta just using the free select tool then Ctrl+x.

And ds, really it's up to the individual whether a graphic or user is good or not. If the graphic is impressive, why does it matter what it is made from? I don't believe you can say that ALL high-end Photoshop artists are better than ALL high-end Gimp artists. Just because it costs $400 doesn't make the creative capacity of the user any better.

I do agree that my Empty Space graphic is the best by far, but I will go on making graphics at my own leisure, thanks.

I use gimp and photoshop and can make the same things on it 1 of the only things gimp doesn't have is layer styles.
and also the paths/pen tool is better for cutting out images.
and ya that large image is kick ass even i can't do that.
EDIT: i wish photoshop had the spark brush

I zoomed in really close, then traced it with the free select tool. It's not that hard.

Well I haven't tried chidori's way of using the paths/pen tool, so see what you can get from using that.
