Re: ATTN: FFRevolution
I don't disagree with the premise of this thread- that the staff seem to promise a lot more than they can deliver- but I disagree with some of the conclusions drawn.
Yeah money is an issue. Being non-profit is an issue. But these would be mitigated if the community expectations were in line with what is actually happening. I'll talk about the dev team and the simfile review process because that's what I know best. There's tons of shit going on behind the scenes. I'm sure you guys know the dev team have big goals- redesigning the homepage, new engine, raw scoring, the list goes on. I'm sure you guys also know that AJ quit being a game manager and left a leadership vacuum that Silvuh is doing his best to fill. These changes go by slowly because, without throwing money at it, all the staff have other jobs and obligations that take priority over FFR. And so large periods of time go by where it feels like nothing is going on to the average user, but things are in fact actually happening. This is an area that can be improved- I talk a lot about increasing transparency, and I think it's the simplest first step to take and could even be fun for the staff if done well. The suggestion of changing staff or adding more staff is more complicated than it appears. Throwing more people at the kinds of issues that need to be solved with dedication and care doesn't nessecarily deliver a better product. And replacing "lazy" staff has its own pitfalls. AJ is a great example of what happens when a staff member leaves (note that he certainly wasn't lazy). A gap in the structure like that takes time to fill properly. Cycling new staff constantly is just as disruptive as having lazy staff. With this in mind it's obvious that striking a balance between finding staff with the free time to no-life work on the site out of pure passion versus replacing people too quickly is difficult. It's an issue with the site since its start (Tass aside, he was his own issue) and it's not going to go away so long as we aren't throwing money at it. In conclusion, maybe the site is doomed to die because of these issues. If there's going to be some super duper revolution I'll be along for the ride because I find the game and the community compelling. But I don't think it's as bad as people want to think it is. Stuff will happen. Slowly, probably, but hey. It's for free and with love.

Re: ATTN: FFRevolution
Staff should remove their place if they can't handle the responsibilities of what they signed up for in the first place if that's the truth.
There are oodles of qualified people who would love to have the chance to be able to better the community in some way. I really can't say much at the moment because my mindset at the moment is out the window. But you should see the point I'm trying to deliver. It's not just my thoughts, it's some of the community's.

Re: ATTN: FFRevolution
I don't remember ever personally being frustrated with the staff of this site, though to me FFR's always been a game (as opposed to a community) first and foremost, and so maybe that can account for my ignorance
And constructive criticisms of how things operate is cool and necessary but these threads seem to happen pretty frequently and idk I just worry that too many of these might worsen the already needlessly stressful and thankless positions that the FFR staff occupy

Re: ATTN: FFRevolution
ive always seen FFR as a community as opposed to strictly a game. hell, if i were just playing FFR and not paying attention to the community, i probably would have quit by now lol.
so yea, i can see where the concern is if staff "arent doing their jobs". ofc i said this before, i have no idea how good of a job theyre doing, so im not going to hop on one side of the argument or the other. |

If they signed up to contribute say, 10 units of work, but are only contributing 2 now, removing them still removes 2 units of stuff getting done. I would much rather increase transparency first so people can see what is really going on. Then, if need be, grow the staff cautiously and deliberately. Not with some huge "revolution" that people like to dream up. Adding a ton of new talent and energy into a system with tired administration just causes chaos and fractures the community. I've seen it before in online communities and corporate environments alike and I have no reason to think FFR is any different. It's important to keep the systems that are working and fill gaps in leadership slowly. The last thing I want to see is a blind drive for change cause the site to split apart. Have we already forgotten about ThirdStyle and KBO? Of course, then again maybe I'm just an old man holding back progress and I should get out of your way and let the fireworks explode all at once. Might as well try, right, I mean people keep insisting the site is dead (despite the site being alive enough for those people to have an audience...)

Still with that said, why do other staff members get special treatment for being inactive. Even if they are working on projects slowly and steadily, being inactive hurts the community more than people realize.

Re: ATTN: FFRevolution
This is what Hi looks like after sex.
On a more serious note, in summary, the staff aren't doing that bad but the community would like to see more transparency. |
