wrt the gun/hammer thing: if riotpolice's dad simply wanted to break his phone the easiest way wouldn't be to hammer it but to defenestrate it or flush it down the toilet or something. the fact that he went all the way to shoot it instead is obviously symbolic.
a toilet or open window in the wrong person's hands can also definitely be used to kill a human being.
