Oh god. "Personally, I don't believe in Evolution."
I stopped watching there.

A dog show for girls.
What do you expect? Anyone with any biology education at the higher level, or any academic self respect at all knows that within the scientific community, evolution is considered fact. To not teach it in the classroom is a tragedy and completely debauches the education of our youth. Obviously many of these women are not the brightest or most educated minds, but props to those ladies that defend the facts. Many of these answers are communicated so poorly though. My word. If I was this ineffective and illogical in communicating ideas in an interview situation I would never have gotten into professional school. Many of them are considering both sides. However, anyone that has seriously considered the issue also knows that creationism is not biology and is not science, and should therefore never, under any circumstances, be taught in a biology or science class. If it deserves a mention at all, it's a scientific dismantling of the idea and showing why it holds no weight at all when discussing the scientific method. It should really be saved for philosophical consideration at most. People can believe what they want, but that idea is completely independent of what we should be teaching kids in school.

Re: God damnit.
What upsets me is that crap like this is so widespread -- it just bogs down our overall scientific literacy, and to me that's doing our world a great disservice. Hell, I was never taught evolution in my HS bio class, and I know several others who never learned about evolution in their classes either.
Stuff like this just makes me cringe. The notion that the average person doesn't find evolution to be fact in the same way that gravity is a fact or the heliocentric model is a fact is just... gahhhh. |

Re: God damnit.
Best answer given by Lauren Carter of Vermont at 13:00 -- the only good answer given (it's not a super-complete answer but it's the best out of all of them).
Midnight: No, just beaten down. I feel like it's a problem that isn't getting better. Last edited by Reincarnate; 06-24-2011 at 02:41 PM.. |

"We are smarter than ever these days" says a woman in a group who know absolutely nothing about what they are talking about.
"I think we should leave it up to the government because people might have a problem with it". Yeah and leaving it up to the government will change people's minds? I also love the amount of ridiculous hand movements that they use.

Re: God damnit.
Woot, Vermont! So chill.
I was hoping at least one of them would say something along the lines of "Obviously. The fact that so many of these other idiot bitches don't realize how significant and important evolution is just shows you how much our current education system is lacking. Hopefully this generation of kids won't be as stupid." I guess that might've put them out of the running.. Though I doubt any of them really hold this belief.

Re: God damnit.
As far as I'm aware, this "issue" is much less prevalent in most other areas of the world. For some reason, the US appears to be an outlying data point in many correlations between things like GDP and development index and religiosity and acceptance of evolution. Americans are stubborn and stupid.
Belief in Evolution (National Geographic, 2005): Education of Evolution (scienceagainstevolution.org, 2002):

Re: God damnit.
The second law of thermodynamics proves that organization cannot flow from chaos. Complex live organisms cannot rearrange themselves into an organism of a higher form as claimed by evolutionists. This is scientifically backwards according to the second law of thermodynamics that has never been proven wrong. Scientists cannot have it both ways. The second law of thermodynamics is proven to be correct. Evolution lacks any scientific proof. Evolution is simply an empty theory.

The second law means that the entropy of a system cannot decrease. This, however, has nothing to do with 'flowing from chaos'. Things organize themselves naturally in nature all the time. We can see it happening. For example, something as simple as a plant emerging from a seed planted into the Earth. You take something simple and it turns into a vastly complex organized system. This in and of itself shows that you're wrong, but there's a reason it works like this. Order can arise from disorder because the Earth in and of itself does not constitute a closed system. In other words, the Earth gets energy from outside sources (e.g. the sun) to drive organizational systems. This in turn causes a net increase of entropy in the universe, but a minimally entropic system here on Earth. This is observed naturally on many levels. Consider lipid membrane formation for one, since it is a perfect example. If you put lipids themselves into water, one might intuitively not expect them to stick together, since it would appear as if the system were maximally entropic, or chaotic, when all of the lipids were dispersed. However, this is not the case. Lipids are naturally surrounded by water molecules, which would cause a relatively organized system of fat molecules surrounded by an organization of water molecules. Instead, lipids stick together and form membranes with hydrophobic regions, causing most of the water molecules to continue to float freely, maximizing the chaos of the environment while causing a small portion of the environment (the membrane) to be highly organized. This is just one basic example of how organization emerges in a system where entropy has to be maximized. With respect to evolution being an empty theory; this simply isn't true either. There are mountains of evidence supporting evolution. Consider doing some, you know, actual reading. Try: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/ http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/faq-speciation.html http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/faq-misconceptions.html Nuff said? (The fact that claims like this are still made in an age where a quick google will quickly debunk it blows my mind)

Entropy doesn't imply that shit just breaks apart all the time and flees into chaos. Read up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy Chemical/physical processes can bring about "order" just fine out of "chaos." Also made fun of here (2:44 lol): I'm surprised this video lacked an "Argument from Fear of Death" bit. Last edited by Reincarnate; 06-25-2011 at 03:29 PM.. |
