Religionships--> Can They Float?
Hello FFR family!
Posting a question of religion difference and relationships. Feel free to give your uncut opinoin. Situation:I am a agnostic, ex-christian that has a strict christian girlfriend. Should I try to look into her belief more, eventhough I am most certainly set on my belief, or is it futile? Can Christians deal with non believers? Christianity is love......right? Maybe not Thanks |

Re: Religionships--> Can They Float?
They can float if both people strictly stay out of each other's religious lives. She's not going to "enlighten" you any more than anyone else will.
My bargain with religious people is this - I promise that if you don't bug me with your religion, I won't tell you exactly how unintelligent it is.

Re: Religionships--> Can They Float?
It depends on which denomination. My gf is Methodist and not the strictest christian and she listens to my beliefs (I'm deist) and I listen to hers and we get along great because we know we aren't going to change each other. Some denominations will make that harder just by the nature of their beliefs.
Some people are going to be closed-minded about religious beliefs and you're not going to be able to deal with it, but there's plenty of christians who are open-minded enough to make a relationship possible/painless.

I don't think it's good to have a relationship with where you have ignore something big about them. If you can't form some kind of agreement I think you should just give up on her.

Re: Religionships--> Can They Float?
From experience, it can work. However, both individuals need to be flexible and open minded, and respect the position of the other. When one person is overly devout, it doesn't work.
I'm non religious and I think every girl I've ever dated was catholic. Whether or not we jived usually depended on how religious she was. It either ended awkwardly in a drawn out manner because she was overly religious and inflexible in her ways or we had a great relationship because religion didn't matter. I.e. we had the same values anyway, and she wasn't overly devout or strict about her religion, it was just something she had grown up with and enjoyed for community reasons and such. I'd say another factor is how great you get along. If you're both really alike and get along great then a religious difference doesn't matter nearly as much, especially if she isn't overly devout. So in conclusion, it depends. If you're an atheist and she's a devout mormon, it won't work. If you're an atheist and she's a flexible catholic that loves you and doesn't take religion too seriously then it can definitely work.

Re: Religionships--> Can They Float?
It would probably be better if you brought the situation up with her and had a conversation with each other about it while completely respecting each others opinions.
Thats probably a better idea than asking random people on the internet for religious advice. But what do I know, I'm just some random person on the internet. |

Yes, religionships can float. But the real question is:
Will it blend?

Re: Religionships--> Can They Float?
How far do you want to move in your relationship? Unless they're ethically loose, most people would reply with 'marriage' - or feign ignorance. In a 'religionship' the couple turns a blind eye. Ignorance is not a real solution. These relationships can't stay that way forever.

Re: Religionships--> Can They Float?
Interesting, I was in a situation similar to this 2 GF's back. Hardcore Nondenominational Christan with an Atheist. (Me being the Atheist.) I recommend actually going to church with her. Even if you don't agree, she'll be happy that you're willing to spend time with her even if you disagree on how the time is spent. (I realize church is not about being with whom you come with but about God.) Also, do her parents know about what you think if they're religious with your GF?

With that being said, as long as you both keep your mouth shut about the religion you follow it'll work. Don't snipe at each other about being a god lover or a hell goer and it'll all work out. Be like Mr. Rogers, man. |
