A sad day in baseball.
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...=.jsp&c_id=mlb
Harry Kalas, 73, long-time announcer for the Philadelphia Phillies, passed away this afternoon. This man was the voice of Philadelphia sports. Every single one of my great Phillies memories has his voice booming, "Outta here!" or "Struck him out!" in the background. I'm inconsolable. I'm actually sobbing for a man I never met. I hope Tass is taking it Ok. If anyone loves the Phillies more than me around here, it's him.

He should have. He's going to be heartbroken, as am I. What a crappy birthday present. Way to die harry Kalis.

Re: A sad day in baseball.
That sucks. Lots of death floating around baseball early this season. The Angels' pitcher got killed by the drunk driver, now this.... Not a good start to the season. I will say that I will be just as sad as you are when Uecker passes. He is the voice of the Brewers, and nobody else will be able to follow him up.

Re: A sad day in baseball.
Don't even make me start on Vin Scully, guys.
I will QQ for days when he passes away...he's been the Dodgers' voice for over 50 ****ing years, and the only I've ever known. R.I.P. Harry Kalas Last edited by foilman8805; 04-13-2009 at 03:21 PM.. |

Vin Scully is incredibly annoying and has no idea what he's talking about 80% of the time. Keep him out of this. thanks.
And, yeah... I'm so sad. I have never known a Phillies game without Harry's voice. We can't lose Merrill Reese now. Ever.

How does one get attached to somebody they've never met?

Re: A sad day in baseball.
When you hear someone almost every day for six months year after year?
I don't think it's too difficult at all. And more than being 'attached', it's a feeling of familiarity that's now gone for a lot of people. |

Re: A sad day in baseball.
Jayson Stark said it well.
"The thought of watching Phillies games without that voice is unimaginable... If Harry Kalas didn't describe a play, it's like it never happened." You know, as sad as I am, I am so happy that I got to see Harry call the final play of the Phillies winning the World Series. That moment is even more special to me now, knowing that the Phillies were able to win one in my lifetime with Harry calling it.

Re: A sad day in baseball.
Indeed, had the Phils not won the World Series, all would not be right in Philly. Perhaps He has no need to continue announcing that we've achieved it.

Re: A sad day in baseball.
I don't mean like it would have been for the best if he retired. Just now, after he died, I realize how special it was having the Phils win it all with Harry's voice celebrating it.
