Athiest sign
At the Washington state capitol there's a sign that is under huge discrepancies. It is the Atheist sign that is at the capitol display next to the nativity scene and a "holiday" tree.
Some articles about it from a local news show: http://www.kirotv.com/news/18172046/detail.html http://www.kirotv.com/news/18212163/detail.html#- Now what is really quite bothering is the amount of protest that religious folk are presenting. The claim that it is offensive to people whom believe. This is like us asking them to take away nativity scenes at churches because they're offensive to us. (in my opinion) There is one man who disagrees with the sign that says, "Hey I believe in Jesus Christ and if you don't, that's alright cause you're gonna fry like a Jimmy Dean pure pork sausage." (Found: http://www.kirotv.com/news/18207510/detail.html#-) What is worse is that Governor Gregoire is under fire for allowing freedom of speech. (Found: http://www.kirotv.com/news/18212163/detail.html#-) Opinions? Edit: I forgot to add that there are parts of the sign i disagree with in a slight aspect of terminology such as "There are no angels" I don't believe in angels the way the bible suggests but i do bealive an angel as a human being who is kind is appropriate use of the word. Re: Athiest sign
Yea well maybe it's offensive for us for them to have their signs up and everywhere.
Basicly, they chose to be christians, just like some of us choose to be athiest. Not our problem you're getting offended, it's your problem, since you chose it. xD

Re: Athiest sign
Well I mean being an Atheist i support the sign, but it could be a little reworded. As in a devil could be someone who does things that aren't morally correct, and the angel could be someone who could have donated to a food bank. I mean why be so harsh about it? Placing it at the scene is a good idea so it's view yes, but it's doing more harm because it shows that they're trying to ruin Christmas. But to me it wasn't much about the birth of a child it was more a time to be with my family.

Re: Athiest sign
People put up the nativity and trees to celebrate a religious holiday. Why would athiests want to put up a sign near these holiday symbols? What are they celebrating?
I'm not being sarcastic. This is a serious question.

Re: Athiest sign
First of all, the sign proclaims that religion enslaves minds and hardens hearts. Kind of innapropriate if you ask me, considering that the holiday display (I'm thinking) doesn't have such a negative sign directed to those not practicing or believing in any religion. I don't really care for either group in particular, but I don't think the response would be so negative if the sign didn't say that.
That's really firm and kind of pushy.

Re: Athiest sign
the sign seems insensitive to me. i mean, im not gonna start freaking out about it, but it seems a little classless. i guess just cause its the holiday season. but they do have a right to say it.

Re: Athiest sign
A religious person being offended by this sign only shows that hes not 100% confident in his faith. If he was he wouldn't give a ****. Religious nuts are quite annoying. They always cry about being oppressed when they can look in any direction and find an equally brainwashed citizen of their faith.
At least it isn't as bad as it used to be. <3 21st century. |

Re: Athiest sign
if those atheists dont want to celebrate the holidays, they should keep to themselves instead of imposing those kind of messages.

Re: Athiest sign
I agree. My ex would bring me to her church, but she never once pushed her beliefs on me at all. Nor did her church.

Re: Athiest sign
Anyone who is in this thread and who doesn't watch Keith Olbermann needs to do so. He talked about something similar to this earlier tonight.
I think it is completely ridiculous that something like this is on display at Capital Hill. Atheism isn't a religion, rather an "explicit position". I am actually infuriated that they would put something like this on that ****ing tree. And for God's sake, call it ****ing Christmas. I wouldn't have any problem with someone else saying "Happy Hanukkah" |

Re: Athiest sign
It is a little classless. Just because atheists don't have their own holidays doesn't mean they have to attempt to ruin the experience for everyone else.

Re: Athiest sign
Religious people are always pushing their beliefs on atheists, so what's the difference? It's not harsh imo. It looks to me like they put that sign up out of annoyance.

Oh, and had you or this Olbermann fellow done any research whatsoever, you would know that Atheism is a federally-recognized religion. Last edited by Squeek; 12-8-2008 at 10:33 PM.. |
