Never go to any sites that aren't classified as "safe" by at least 2 people you know and trust. As for dealing with the virus, as long as you can boot into safe mode (press F8 as windows is loading. Generally I just repeatedly push it as soon as my PC has POSTed and I get to the list eventually).

Once in safe mode, either do a system restore, or use an virus removal utility to get rid of the virus (antiviruses are only good for detecting and occasionally quarantining. You actually need to get a program to remove that specific virus - if one exists - to remove a virus for certain).

You could also go the whole hog by scanning your PC, isolating the infected non-system files, backing up your data, and re-installing.

If all else fails, the only option is a format I'm afraid
Edit: Whoops sorry, read the first post as the last post. *ahem*

Still getting used to the whole upside down forum thing. Gonna see if I can flip it.

You might be able to fix it using the restore function of the XP cd. Dunno about Vista but booting from the XP disk lets you go to the recovery console (I believe, never had to do it myself), and from there it should be possible to manually copy over System32.dll to your windows directory.

I did click it. It scared the **** out of me.
1. Your browser window becomes a 1/4 of the screens total size.
2. When you move your mouse over it, it moves to a different corner of the screen.
3. some creepy messages start popping up.
4. I hit the restart button on my computer.

Now the problem is, I shouldn't be on the computer right now so if a virus pops up and it worked before everyone left, I'm dead.

Thanks a ****ing lot for scaring the **** out of me.

And like I said... working on a laptop with the same issue at the moment. So yeah.

Loading ubuntu or any other linux or operating system won't help him back up data. System32.dll is different depending on his system. so it's not like he can just stick another DLL in there. also since I'll bet my life his harddrive is formatted in the NTFS format he cannot use linux on it anyway. Linux uses FAT storage, not NTFS.
Wow, okay, you didn't read very well.

The system32.dll was my problem, and I only offered a suggestion to him that helped me. Furthermore, it will absolutely help him back up his data if he needs to do it because you can access all of the information on the hard drive through Ubuntu and transfer it to an external hard drive temporarily.

The whole point of loading Ubuntu is that it's not even related to Windows and not having a .dll won't effect how you run Linux.

Lastly, I know that Ubuntu uses FAT, that's why I said that you have to get someone to code the hard drive so you can mount it and read the info.

It worked for me. It was either that, or Tech Support was recommending I spend $600 to get the 'raw data' lifted off of my computer and then transferred to some hard drive. **** Tech Support, I did that **** for free!!

No need to get hostile, and I'm not going to flame you, man. Relax.

You can look up the info on how to use an NTFS hard drive and convert it to FAT on the net. It's there. You also don't need partition magic to do it because I didn't.

Also, he never said exactly said what error he had, just that he had the BSOD. The system32.dll was my problem in a completely separate event. Also, I never suggested sticking another system32.dll in the system...I don't even know where you got that, because what I said to do was after you got the info you wanted, you wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows.

linux should fix your problem. my HP computer died on us only two days after getting it back from them saying it was fixed. it took us ten tries to turn the thing on. then it booted up and lasted for all of 5 minutes and died. my mom (technology illiterate) blamed it on the hard drive. i said that i figured its a PSU problem and said we should plug that hard drive onto a different computer. an HD problem after a boot would not cause the computer to turn itself off. as it would just BSOD.

Well honestly, this may be the "shotgun" approach, but to me it seems to simply be a matter of backing your data up to a spare hard drive (if you have one, but they're cheap anyways) via the recovery console, running CHKDSK, then reinstall Windows. If you get the same BSOD after the reinstall, then it probably is a badly corrupt sector near the beginning of the hard drive (or the section/partition where Windows is installed). If not, it probably was a virus. In which case, don't move or use your data from the external yet, scan it first and quarantine the infected files.

The only problem with this is the re-installation of any programs installed before you formatted, but as long as you have the data and all the necessary information for Direct2Drive/Steam/etc installs then it entails at most an hour or two of effort (excluding the time to re-copy everything back from the external to your usual drive).

It's the least complex method I know of, and rates about 50% on the inconvenience scale. It's considerably simpler than fiddling around with formatting to FAT, installing Linux, and all that.

If you do get the BSOD afterward and it is a corrupt sector... swap out the external with the internal, install Windows, and voila.

As for Linux, the only reason I don't support t is due to it's lack of game developer support, I am a gamer first and foremost, after all.

Look on the bright side, at least your PSU didn't burst into flames like one of my friend's did

Your best bet would to be to just buy a new hard drive. Foil and Shin are right, you probably have a corrupt sector.

I mean, sure you could reformat and see how it runs, but there's a good chance it won't be reliable at all and will just crash again. Then again, I can't tell how deep the registry corruption went.

Seeing as it is a laptop, you don't really have the option to run it as a slave drive in another computer and see if you can recover it that way. Data recovery from professionals is ridiculously expensive anyways.

Sorry dude.

THIS JUST HAPPENED TO MY FRIEND THIS WEEK

What you should do is try to boot up any type of OS from disc. If you don't now any go here and download it. When you have the disc put it in and change your BIOS to start up from disc. If you don't know how to do this when you start your computer press your BIOS key which is a function ('F') key. If you don't know it, mash em. All BIOS are different but it's usually pretty easy to figure out, just have "Start from Disc" boot priority #1.

If you can't access your BIOS page or start this operating system you have a hardware problem or somebody deleted data on your motherboard. If the OS does start up your in luck, you just simply need to install windows. The problem is probably because a hacker or virus deleted your system32 folder. Boot from disc but this time use your Windows OS instillation disc and attempt to repair your current version of Windows, if this does not work reformat.

Also internetisseriousbusiness.com did not give you that virus. When I first went on it I thought it was shifty so I checked the source and as far as I can see there was no virus, if so, I broke so many computers >_<.
