I forgot about the Incredibles, Kill Bill 2, and National Treasure.
"Honey, where is my super suit!" "Why do you neeeed to knoooooow?" hehe. And, Kill Bill 2 was better than 1. Anyone who doesn't like Tarantino is not cool. National Treasure was about what I expected. A decent movie that was taking advantage of the whole Dan Brown / treasure hunting kick that we're on right now. It was quite full with incorrect information, but that is to be expected.

I didn't really see that many movies last year... Shaun of the Dead and Kill Bill Vol. 2 were the best that I saw.

Ok, I'll just review all the movies that I saw and can recall at this point.
Spider Man 2: Far too emo. The first one was much better. You know, the one where he doesn't talk about his feelings for half the movie. Anchorman: Funny, but overrated. Napoleon Dynamite: Dumbest thing I'd ever seen in my life ever (two evers was intentional). It wasn't funny until after the fact, and even then, it was such a horribly made movie (stfu Indie lovers) that I'll die if it wins any award. Kill Bill Volume 2(1? When did 1 come out?): Amazingly awesome. Quintin Tarentino is a genius of masterful proportions. I haven't seen a movie that engaged me that much since Pulp Fiction. I actually liked V1 more than V2, though. National Treasure was alright. Entirely forgettable movie. I don't even remember what it was about. Hero was pretty awesome, but not as good as Crouching Tiger. Harry Potter 3 blew major amounts of ass. I never saw it, no. But the first blew major amounts of ass, the second blew major amounts of ass, I see no reason why the third should discontinue the trend. And don't be like BUT ANTI ITS A LOT BETTER THAN THE OTHERS because that's what people said about the second movie too, and that was just as bad as the first, if not worse. The Aviator was really freakin' wierd. The way of the future. The way of the future. The way of the future. The Incredibles was actually a lot better than I expected. Although I don't remember a whole lot of it, on account of seeing it with my girlfriend. Oceans 12 was a disappointment. It was good, but nowhere near as good as a sequel to the amazingly awesome Ocean's 11 should be. For the record, Ocean's 11 is one of my all-time favorite movies. I'll edit in more later if I remember them. |

Ocean's 12 was one of the biggest dissappointments of the year. It had a lot to live up to being a sequel to the fantastic Ocean's 11, and it didn't even come close.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: The Incredibles is the best movie that I have seen in years. Nothing else I saw in 2004 really matters. |

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind---(Kate Winslet, Jim Carrey, Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo)---Winslet gave a brilliant performance as a woman who wants more out of life but she isn't quite sure what, and Carrey was stunning in his portrayal of what I percieved to be a severe introvert looking for any way to come out of his shell. It was a very truthful movie. Brilliant writing by Charlie Kaufman (also the writer of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation) and wonderful direction by Michel Gondry. Very moving and visually pleasing film. Kate Winslet is also up for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance.
Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou---(Bill Murray, Own Wilson, Willem Defoe, Angelica Houston, Jeff Goldblum, Cate Blanchett)---Murray in another of Wes Anderson's films. (The Royal Tenenbaums, Bottle Rocket, Rushmore) The entire cast was perfect in his/her respecting roles. The realtionships made in this film are astounding...Murray surprisedme yet again with his ability to actually act.) The colors were wonderful, the storyline was grand, and song in the climactic scene at the end was Sigur Ros's Svefn g englar, so naturally I was ecstatic. I Heart Huckabees---(Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Mark Wahlberg, Naiomi Watts, Jason Schwartzman, Jude Law)--This was a fantastic film that was basically, if I needed to summarize it, an philosophical argument between existentialists and nihilists. It was hysterical...but not for the small minded. (I espeically enjoyed the red balloon scene) Beyond the Sea---(Kevin Spacey, Kate Boseworth, Bob Hoskins, John Goodman)---Kevin Spacey BEAUTIFULLY portrays Bobby Darin. This film is great even for non-musical theatre goers. The acting is superb by Spacey, Bosworth is the gorgeous Sandra Dee, and Goodman is Darin's agent. There were some movies I saw this year that I thought had good potential, but didn't quite impress me the way that these others did. The Aviator---(Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, Alan Alda)---Scorceses's epic tale of Howard Hughe was brilliantly acted by Cate Blanchett. She plays Katherine Hepburn in a fashion that could only be described as mesmerizing.) Very well done. Leo DiCaprio was good in his portrayal of Hughes, but he was a crazed oil tycoon who wanted everything and went bankrupt and crazy. It took three hours to convey to the audience that maybe there was something mentally and emotionally wrong with him. Hmm.....too long. Cate Blanchett and Alan Alda are both up for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress. This film is also up for Best Picture and won a Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Motion Picture. Closer---(Julia Roberts, Clive Owen, Natalie Portman, Jude Law)---This was originally a stage play written by Patrick Marber. It was wonderfully written, but horribly put together. The acting was terrible, and some of the emotion was over the top....I thought it was too much for a movie with such high emotion already. It didn't need all the extra fluff. Natalie Portman and CLive Owen both received Golden Globes for their performances in this film, and they are, again, nomiated for Academy Awards in the same catagory. Sorry to go on forever, but I am a theatre major who LOVES films....and I am a huge nerd when it comes to these kinds of things. =) |

Van Helsing---complete CRAP. Kate Beckinsale couldn't keep a dialect to save her life....Hugh Jackman wasn't doing a great job, either....(for another dialect screw up...watch Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York...wow.) Another thing about this mound of feces in movie form is that all the stories of Dracula (or vampires in general), Frankenstein, and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde were combined to make some piece-of-expletive film about a supernatural bounty hunter. Bad. Very bad.
Matrix Revolutions---like Matrix Reloaded it blew major forms of anus. The movie moron twins should have stopped at the first one....anyone who casts Keanu Reeves in more than one movie on purpose should be shot. The End. As for Lord of the Rings 3, 2 was better. Enough said. Man, I hate Liv Tyler...she has to be one of the ugliest women in cinema. Shrek 2? Wow. Shrek wasn't even that good....but I guess it is okay for people with an IQ equal to that of a doorknob. Eddie Murphy as a donkey who never shuts up....who's idea was that, because someone needs to be put out of their misery. I will say that X2 was pretty good. Nightcrawler was done exceptionally well, I thought. The scene at the beginning was amazing....the acting is sub-par, and the adaptation of the comic books isn't what I would like it to be....but I am not writing it, so I guess I can't complain. As far as sticking it with the "year's best" I would have to say no. It is just another action flick and excuse to show a woman naked. (Well....somewhat naked. She does have 8 hours of blue laytex paint work done on her body.) |

Well, yeah. I also loved that first scene with Nightcrawler attacking the White House. That was cool. I also loved the break-in with the Stryker soldiers. I loved the parts with Wolverine and Colossus.
As for Shrek 2, I did enjoy it, but Shrek 4-D in Universal Studios completely SUCKED. I was disappointed. Van Helsing...well, I've seen better vampire movies. I did like Richard Roxburgh's part of Dracula was good though. Kate Beckinsale...She was better as Selene in Underworld. Matrix Revolutions, It was really good. I think the new oracle was awesome. The old one was good, but not as good. |

I didn't like how they tried to give the new oracle a back story. I thought that was so stupid.
I didn't care much for Underworld either....but then again, I don't care much for vampire stories because they never seem to be told correctly.

I toally agree with boondock. Metallica blows. Not only does their music suck, but they are known as complete jackasses as well. Who wants to listen to crappy music played by guys who aren't even respected among other musicians? Yikes.

I just saw Collateral and it was actually really good. I liked the directed (though at first I thought it was cheesy and annoying). I would consider it one of the best of 2004. Worth a watch.
