Replays disabled

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on December 31st, 2010

It appears that replays were causing the load issues that made the site crash around midnight central. I have disabled them and it looks like everything is running well again. Over the next few days I am going to be pruning the replay table in an attempt to make it more managable and less process intensive. Any replay files that were not flagged to be saved might be deleted as a result.

Update:
Our replay table is 2,453,387 replays big, clocking in at a bit over 5.5GB. The towering size of this database can be seen in how much more quickly the site loads now that they are disabled. However, replays are a great feature of the site and I am working to bring them back together in an improved form.

I am currently in the process of exporting the database off of FFR’s server and onto one of my personal servers so that I can optimize and prune it without slowing down the main site. After this is done, I will reimport the replay table into the site. I expect this to take about 3 days, after which you will be able to view replays but not create new ones.

I will also be working with Velocity to make replays an opt-in system instead of being automatically saved after each gameplay. Essentially, you will have a place you can click on the results screen to save the last gameplay, otherwise the replay will not be stored. Unfortunately, I believe we will also have to limit replay saves for the time being, but our plan is to start at a size that is too restrictive and then expand from there. Therefore, after this new system is implemented, expect modified limits on the number of replays you are able to save.

Cheers,
aperson

  5. Your are really awesome to have traced to problem so quickly

  6. Don’t think words are enough to express my thankfulness to your dedication, aperson.

  7. I went to get on FFR like an hour ago and was like “Oh shit it’s down!” But now I’m all like “Yay it’s back up!” thanks aperson!

  8. Ap, you duh man.

  9. D: Whatever, I knew it was just a matter of time before replays took over the universe :)

  10. I’m pretty sure they were close to becoming sentient. Probably for the best they started crashing… FFR Skynet would be terrifying.

  11. FFR Skynet would bring about IRL arrows :O
Which would lead to stop signs becoming arrows instead of shades, leading to anything direction wise would become an arrow
And our president would be a Quad-Octo way arrow in all either four or eight technical directions,
leading to Synthlight being the ruler of the world and everyone gets Doughnuts
    So yea we all win.
Except for Rubix. Rubix quit ._.

  12. Good job btw :D

  13. coo

  14. Honestly, the save replay button is genius, should have been the first thing implemented with replays. Good work tracking the problem aperson, we all appreciate your dedication.

  15. These type of detailed updates are what this site has been sorely lacking for years. Anyways, thanks for the update and all the hard work!

  21. Thanks for disabling them!

Ever since the site has been back up my game has run choppy at best. Although constantly choppy so i could play it still…

Either way, its buttery smooth sailing so tyvm!

  22. +1

  23. Hmm… if you are running low of place, maybe you could do a way to add the replay into our computer directly? Since a lot of people have a huge free space into their hard drive.

Well, for me, it won’t be so dramatic =P. I have a 400Go+ of empty space I could use for this eventually.
