Re: Woo Phillies!
Bump for discussion. Who should the Phils use as a DH? Dobbs, Coste, and Jenkins all make for decent hitters. Perhaps the Phils could also cover some defensive shortcomings at first or left field.
The only time the Phils faced a left-hander (like Kazmir) in an American League contest they put Eric Bruntlett at first and made Howard the DH. That could happen again. Bruntlett or Jenkins could also shake things up in left and put Burrell in as DH.

Re: Woo Phillies!
going against a RH pitcher would seem to lead towards putting howard at DH to negate his awful defense and put in someone like dobbs at first who is an additional left handed bat and rocks against RH pitching.
bruntlett is too poor of a hitter. as is coste, really, despite being the better of our two hitting catchers. jenkins is good against lefties though.

Re: Woo Phillies!
No one is arguing that bruntlett can hit, but it would be nice to negate those couple hits to left every game that burrell isn't fast enough to snag. With bruntlett out there our defensive outfield would be arguably as good or better than tampa's. Jenkins would probably be the better choice overall though.

Just because the Pirates blow doesn't mean you have to hate on the Phillies.

And just because a team happens to lose in the playoffs doesn't mean they blow.
I'm still rooting for the Phillies to lose. |

Re: Woo Phillies!
The one thing I'm more worried about more than anything is starting pitching. We're probably going to need two wins out of Cole. I hate to expect perfection from him but what can you do? Brett Myers outdueled both Sabathia and Billingsley, but who knows if he'll be able to take Shields in Tampa? And I don't like Moyer vs. Garza. That kid has had an excellent postseason and Moyer's had a terrible one. His age (twice Garza's) is showing. Haha, this has to be the first time ever one starting pitcher was double the age of the other in any game, much less the series. And I hope Blanton can throw another gem. Honestly I was almost hoping to do a three man rotation so we could have a somewhat rested Hamels for a possible game 7. But in Manuel we trust.
And the Dodgers were supposed to have the better starting pitching but the Phils still won so I guess we'll see.

Philadelphia as a city hasn't won any major sports championships in my lifetime, and I'm 5 years older than you.

Re: Woo Phillies!
Woah...who here started a Phillies discussion and didn't tell me?
First, GO PHILLIEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!!!!! 2nd, the Phillies should probably use Dobbs as a DH, considering he should be starting in the first place. When they face Kazmir, though, I'd say maybe Taguchi **shivers** since they don't have any righty bats off the bench. 3rd, I reeeeally wish we could have faced Boston when you look at their starting pitching. An injured Beckett+a hittable Dice-K and Lester+Wakefield who the Phillies would be licking their chops against is a great matchup for the Phils. That being said, I still feel like we can muster some offense against the Rays, and our bullpen is much stronger than theirs. But, for our starting pitching, Myers and Moyer have to show up these games, otherwise it will be tough. Still, I think the key is the Rays 1st 4 hitters - if we keep them in check, then its ours for the taking. 4th, I have tickets for Game 5. yusssssssssssssss. Edit: 5th, if it doesn't get to Game 5, unless the Phils sweep, I'll be pretty ****ing pissed. Last edited by aTzUeLo1191; 10-20-2008 at 04:51 PM.. |

Re: Woo Phillies!
No. Anything is better than seeing the Red Sox in the series. I can't stand those dongfaces and the boston-crazed media that treats them liked bronzed Adonises.

Re: Woo Phillies!
I agree with you on that note, but still, Boston comes in hobbling while Tampa is injury free. On a similar note, will the Phillies benefit from the 6 day layoff, or do you think it will hurt them?

Re: Woo Phillies!
It will hurt them. They lose the momentum. I mean Cole will pitch well but I'm betting the other starters will be rusty.

Re: Woo Phillies!
It will definately help the pitchers, but I hope it's better for Howard too. If before the playoffs I told you the Phillies would make the WS losing 2 games w/o Howard hitting a HR, I doubt you'd believe me. I'm confident that the Phillies can break the trend of the past few teams (Rox, Tigers) of teams that lose after a long layoff, but its up in the air whether they will or not.

I say Rays in five. Their pitching staff will over power the Philis hitting.

I forgot baseball existed. And I'll come to a game and do some blow with Tass and Rubix.
