Controversial Topics
Anyone have some good controversial topics that would make a good persuasive speech argument? If you could, can you show some pro's and con's.
itt: we argue about the **** the world gives us. |

I changed my mind four loko presents more interesting possibilities than wondering about where Afrobean falls on the sliding scale of autism.

Re: Controversial Topics
Way to edit and make me look retarded.
And that was my original idea for the topic. But I had done that topic like 4 times in Government. So I really don't feel like using it for this class. But it's looking like I'm gonna have to. |

Re: Controversial Topics
If you live in the USA, then:
-The criminal system - ****ed up in SO many ways. Criminals are treated like animals, crowded into overcrowded prisons where gangs run rampant and recidivism isn't even considered. Even staying in one briefly can ruin your life from what goes on in there. Most importantly, it DOESN'T reduce crime, as once you're out there you'll probably have no life to go back to, no job opportunities except even more crime, even if you were sentenced for something like marijuana possession. Also, prison rapes and sexual domination are ridiculously frequent, NOT in the slightest bit funny when they happen to you and the USA is the only country in the world to have life without parole for minors. Given the prevailing opinion in the US being that criminals shouldn't have done the crime if they didn't want to do the time and they deserve whatever they get, this is strictly controversial, and requires a strong dose of human decency and pointing out the ramifications of such a system to counter. http://forums.somethingawful.com/sho...readid=3309904 -The media is in bed with corporations - Remember the huge BP oil spill? Well, a study conveniently found that it wasn't their fault! How convenient! Have pity on the poor, rich megacorporations! Meanwhile the Gulf is literally made of death, with a combination of oil, oil dispersants AND oil eating bacteria that'll **** up your skin and general health. I'm not sure if this is strictly controversial but it is definitely something missing from public discourse somehow. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/09/us....html?_r=2&hpw http://www.huffingtonpost.com/riki-o..._b_720461.html http://socialistworker.org/2010/11/1...gulf-residents http://motherjones.com/blue-marble/2...s-toxic-legacy

Re: Controversial Topics
If you don't put a whole lot of effort into an OP don't expect a whole lot of effort to be put into the other posts to try to make a thread for you. Just sayin~

Re: Controversial Topics
Forgive me I misread your OP D:
I thought you just wanted to talk about controversial topics, not make an essay. |

Re: Controversial Topics
A rather large collection of controversial topics
Warning: The guy, Galen Magnus Xirxes, has a huge ego so his rants have quite some swearing and superiority complex stuff. If you ignore it, you can definitely see some cool things even if you disagree with him on certain things. A few include the War In Iraq, Columbine, Sex, Dangers of the internet (lol), 9/11, ageism, inconsistencies on nudity views, flaws in fanaticism, media lies (Atkins diet article is called "Low Carb, High Bullsh*t" LMFAO). |

Re: Controversial Topics
A big topic we had on campus not to long ago was rape. A girl reported a gang bang rape but she later admitted that it never happened....she just didn't want her new boyfriend to break up with her after he found out she had sex with three guys at once. It's a terribly controversial issue because society tends to blame the victim because there are a select few that use sexual assault for their own personal benefit. If you really want to piss off everyone in your class you can show both sides of the same coin. I'll keep thinking for ya though.

Re: Controversial Topics
Here's an interesting one: The concept of swearing itself is controversial. http://www.snipeme.com/archive.php?y...&rant=swearing
Basically swearing is just one huge bandwagon that started with people who have heard the word used in negative situations, so it passed on as a "bad word". |

There's always that ONE KID in every one of my English classes that decides to write papers on that topic, and their papers almost never turn out good.

Honestly, I'm writing about the legalization of marijuana, and I bet my speech is already 100x better than theirs. Just because I used cite-able sources and used logic. ps: I need one more argument about why marijuana should be legalized, I used medicinal and economic as two of them already. |
