Re: Format war is over
I still think HD-DVD/Blue-Ray are overrated.
Aside from that Microsoft still has Marketplace HD for the 360. Not like they lost all that much. (Aside from you know the HD-DVD drive.) Offhand, I remember hearing that Best Buy wouldn't carry HD-DVDs, but I saw a shelf full when I was there. More than the Blue-Ray actually. |

Also, Squeek, you don't have to dish $3,000 on a blu ray player. You can just buy a PS3.

They made a movie feature for it? That's pretty wonderful. (No sarcasm. I really didn't know they had a movie service on the PSN.)

The movie service is coming out with Home, which should be coming out... eventually. We'll see how that one pans out. It seems like they've bitten off a bit much.

Joking aside, the only problems I have with the PS3 are Sony's attitude about it and the present lack of awesomeful games.

$3000 for the HDTV, the blu-ray player / PS3, the cables, and re-buying every movie I own just to see a few pixels' difference.
This is sane to some people? |

besides resolution, i thought the main difference was audio and storage.

You can get cables for $10. Squeek, I like you. I do. I'm not trying to antagonize or anything.

I used to watch Laurel and Hardy when I was young, they gave me the power to enjoy movies that are cheap and dont need a 3,000 dollar machine to play on.

Re: Format war is over
Sure I'm exaggerating the price, but really I wouldn't pay a dime more than I pay for DVDs to get it in Blu-Ray, even if I had an HDTV (which I don't).
And somehow I doubt you're getting Blu-Rays for $10. DVDs are $20-$30. Why would Blu-Ray movies be cheaper? Oh, also, shox, there's an upper limit on human vision. 1080p exceeds that limit. Only a small percentage of people can actually tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, and that's only with the proper cables (please show me where you see $10 composite / HDMI cables) and a properly-sized television from just the right distance. |

Flea market. I never said they were legal - I'm 90% sure most of the Blu-Rays I own were procured by less than amiable means, but that does not mean I don't enjoy them. I paid $10 for Sunshine, 3:10 to Yuma, Live Free or Die Hard, 28 Weeks Later, and 300.
And Sunshine, for the record, was one of the prettiest movies I've ever seen without the assistance of Blu-Ray. On Blu-Ray, it was very, very, very incredible.

Squeek: of course dropping an insane amount of cash on a set of electronics just for 'a few pixels' isn't worth it if you don't have some of the equipment beforehand. Nobody would drop it at once. I have a PS3 because I think on the long term and haven't much time to play video games anyway. I have an HDTV and a 7:1 surround sound system because me and my roommate's chipped in. I get pirated blu-ray movies because it's convenient. My HDMI cable cost me $5. My optical audio cable cost me $10. Overall, I think I've spent $600 on the whole thing (I paid for the whole cost of the PS3 - $400 for a JPN20GBPS3). Not a bad deal at all. plus, I'm a pixel whore and I love it. I loved Sunshine so much, hell I love Danny Boyle and Cillian Murphy together in anything, which may be only 2 things.
At my work our 360 HDDVD player addons dropped to $50, too bad they're still never going to sell haha |
