I highly suggest you stop mashing if you want to improve. It's probably the worst way to get better at FFR. Think of it like this, let's say you're playing block ops/mw2 and you realize you're not good enough to get high k/d ratios so you start noobtubing 24/7. Sure it could be fun, but you're wasting your time if you want to improve. I don't even mash on Death Piano cause I want to keep improving my score on it PA wise.

****** mashing can be hilariously fun but on files in FFR, it's just a nono if you're going for score (putting aside Vertex Beta vrofl)

Pretty much this. (Also, post your strategies for unlocking Sunlight here, as that's pretty much the only mash-pass achievement the game recognizes.)

Mashing is a skill in itself however. Even mashing is a skill that one can practice and improve on. You have to consider note density and adjust the speed of your mashing to compensate for the changes in note density throughout the song. Mash too fast and you'll get extraneous boo's, too slow and you'll end up getting misses. Also, the note density on different arrows might be different so you will need to mash some keys faster or slower on others. For example, in M.A.M.A., the note density of the left arrow is 0 so one shouldn't even be mashing whatever key they use for the left arrow. Good mashing actually takes skill.

I'm not supporting mashing or anything, I'm just playing the devil's advocate here. However, I have to say it is fun to mash through files like Happy Birthday just for lulz.

Pretty much what reuben_tate said. It's just a different way to play. You're playing a more statistical game.

Plus if you want to get good at a chart you're not going to mash anyway. Mashing is more for those charts which are ridiculous retarded anyway so you're like lol mash FC. If it's anything anywhere reasonable to your skill level you're not going to mash it and you're not going to mash to improve your skill level. You can always go back and re-do mashed stuff later as you improve.

My best mash is probably Pants FC.

Strategy for Sunlight is basically mash just the right amount not to die. Mash too fast and die. Mash too slow and you won't rack up enough boos for the unlock.

Oh and for anyone who hates on mashers so much, just play the files without mashing. If you're as good as you claim you are, you'll net the better score anyway, so quit worrying about it.

Mashing's just a big deal in FFR because the game is combo based scoring

If raw scoring was implemented, it would become "lol that's your problem for getting a shitty raw score"

Hakulyte, for me that'd be a PA score on Revo. You should just quad mash during the one part where its all the jumps. Im sure you can PA the rest of the song, so doing that would probably net you like 80 goods, 40 averages.

Its an additional aspect of the game people dont appreciate.
It's not that we don't appreciate it (well that's arguable). It just shows how much you care less about what the file is trying to portray. A good handful of files have the potential to be fun, but if you continue mashing through them just to achieve a meaningless rank, you are missing out the fun expressed in the steps of the file.

Not only that, FFR have this tendency to reward those with higher combos, where one who strives for PA are the ones who should be rewarded. Seems like the only reason to mash is to lower your ranks which is only temporarily satisfying. It's much more satisfying to work on PA and consistently improve by working out the patterns and play the file.

there's nothing wrong with this thread what the hell yall?
mashing stuff gets ragged on a lot but he's right, it's a COMBO SCORING GAME. if you don't want to see people mash through songs that are past their skill level change the game mechanics =.=

also, considering how bad i am at pseudo-cheating fast patterns (i have trouble even jumptrilling rolls; my snap reaction is always to hit every note discretely), it seems perfectly reasonable to treat mashing as a skill to develop such that when the player DOES get good he can apply it strategically to take down tricky/dense chunks of arrows more easily.

I wouldn't have a problem with raw scoring being implemented. In fact, early on, I'm pretty sure I was vocally in favor of raw scoring. I think combo scoring is stupid anyway.

Still though, if you can do it without mashing, you'll beat the masher, provided you FC.

The best way I can explain it

Files which are:
Easy Hard Doable JustBeyondYourAbility ConceivablyDoable OMGWTFBBQLOLOLOL!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------^^^only mash here

The only thing anyone disagrees on is what constitutes OMGWTFBBQLOLOLOL! Even Dossar classes vROFL there.

To improve, you will practice on those in the Doable and JustBeyondYourAbility.

^ This. I used this "strategy" for most of my FGO FCs: Nomina Nuda Tenemus, Strawberry Sweetz, 11Eleven, Time To Eye, Across Rooftops, even the ending staircase of Pants because lol nerves. (I don't blame your instinct to not cheat patterns due to your extensive Stepmania experience: I do the same thing when I'm having a good PA run.)

It's when you have to mash through more or less the entire file that doing so becomes a problem. :/

Edit: Woo 3K post!

Just got this:

The 47 people whose score I just beat because they were too pussy to mash on a COMBO SCORING game can all go get owned.
Now I can go practice my PA just like everyone else, except I also have a ton of FCs

EDIT- hell yeah, #2 tonight

EDIT- lol I can probably FC this too. Real pro D grade

I see my analogy of FFR and Basketball was apparently not cool enough for this thread. Sweet.

Carry on...

But seriously, I don't think mashing should be encouraged. It is a "skill", but a skill that has very little to do with the purpose of FFR (hence my joke, just as throwing a ball at a backboard is a "skill" but does not help you play basketball).

"hey i'm mashing it must mean i will never improve"

Don't know why people get furious over scores that are mashed from beginning to the end of the stepfile. Why not? As said before, COMBO BASED SCORING.

Finally someone gets it. Mashing can be taken to an advantage for some FGO stepfiles, or even outsmart any bad habits you have.
