Problems editing metrics/english on vista

So my friend has a Vista laptop and i went to add Izzy's metric/english script to give him lots of speed mods but the file wont save.

I looked online and found a thread where a guy had the same problem. I went into the stepmania properties folder and then security, then gave full control to his desktop. But then i went to save the files again and they still wont save.

Does anyone know how i can get it to save?

since i cant really weed out your exact problem you can try copying the metrics already in the folder, pasting it on desktop, and then editing the one from the desktop should easily save it. then move the new metrics to replace the old ones

If your friend's Stepmania folder is located in Program Files, then there's nothing you can do to get it to save due to file virtualization. It's a problem with Vista whose workaround is simply to move the entire program folder outside of Program Files.

yep i tried that. i had to change the name of the file to save it in a different place so i just saved it as metricss/englishh. I saved them to his documents, then dragged them to the desktop and into the proper places in the SM folder.

But when i took the old files out and put the edited files in, the speed mods still werent playable. I THINK it has something to do with .ini files but im not sure.

i should of taken a SS of the error message but he already left.

But basically, the original files have the notepad image with a lil gray washer thing in the left hand corner. When i dragged the edited files from the desktop into the proper place, they just had the notepad image but without the gray washer.

So this makes me think that the new files arn't in .ini but everytime i try to save them as that, or edit the original files, an error keeps telling me i cant save the file =/

hope that makes some sense..

EDIT for Zyb: so should i just drag the SM folder onto the desktop and see if the files save?

If you're confident you have permission to write to the desktop, then sure. Personally though, I think the C Drive is a fine place, seeing how it's easy enough to make a shortcut to the folder and place it on your desktop. But ultimately, you want to take it out of Program Files and put it into a place that you know you have permission to.

If you have a computer with XP you can put the file on to a thumb drive and edit it on that computer.

You don't have to own an entirely different computer... just move the folder.
