Help with drum layering (vid included)
So I'm making this file for a pack (so it's presently unreleased). I'm kinda unsure as to what I should do with the drums though. Read the vid description. I mean some of those 16ths don't layer and some don't even align correctly (like they don't align with the main 4th note drum hits). Should I just drop the 16ths for the drums? They're barely audible anyways. I just don't want things to feel too empty.
Any suggestions for the drum patterns? I just made a repeating pattern each time they occured. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbNi1...e=channel_page Oh and there's some audio lag, but I put the assist tick on to help with that. I guess it doesn't really matter though. Thanks guys!! -Nick

Re: Help with drum layering (vid included)
Is that a bad thing? I don't wanna be the guy that makes stupid threads. I just figured I could get some more opinions here. And there are so many great artist here. It's often very helpful to get some feedback by other people. Sometimes they'll catch stuff you miss.

Re: Help with drum layering (vid included)
Between trying to hear it in a recorded video and trying to hear it over the assist tick, I can't say one way or the other if it's worth omitting the 16ths at the beginning... but, it looks really fun, and the steps seem to make a lot of sense. I was actually kind of wishing I could play it.
Not sure of the quality of the stepfile near the end, because I didn't watch that far (it's already past my beddytime here), but it seems cool. Maybe I'll check out some of your sims. Oh, and to add to the question on your video: personally, if there's not a pitch relevancy thing to take into account, or a pitch relevancy thing would be really repetitive and boring, I think random patterns are the way to go. Drums can often be random. Last edited by Zybanthia; 12-15-2008 at 03:54 AM.. |

And the end has some weird tempo shifts. It's dead-on sync though. It was weird though. It'd go like from 135 BPM to 115, then to 90. Took freakin' forever to step cuz of those tempo shifts!!! I almost gave up. True. I just figured I'd do it while it was on my mind though.

I wouldn't say this is a good song to step in the first place.

Re: Help with drum layering (vid included)
Some parts are. That's why I cut the song. You've heard the whole thing I assume? It's like twice as long and generally the same stuff.
Not the best, but certainly not a very poor choice. I mean it still offers a nice solo. Always so supportive . I still like DF, but I'm gonna be stepping other bands for now. Maybe eventually just the solos cuz I still have a few DF requests. He's just being torrent. =P I was gonna layer the hi hats but there were too many. I was thinking maybe minifreezes, but in many places they'd just be everywhere.

Re: Help with drum layering (vid included)
If you do it right you can swap to the hi-hat when nothing more interesting is going on
assuming the hi-hat itself is interesting, if it's just playing 8ths don't bother

Re: Help with drum layering (vid included)
They become very pronounced towards the end. Think minifreezes would be nice there?

Re: Help with drum layering (vid included)
let's hope so.
:watches video: EDIT: Okay, it looks pretty sweet. You might want to layer in some drums when the music gets quieter or there's not much going on, but otherwise, great. Last edited by moches; 12-15-2008 at 07:18 PM.. |

True. Often there's just not much happening. What slow parts are you referring to though? Would you point them out in the video?
