10-15¢ a meal (packet of ramen) is always cost effective.
A cup of rice is about 180-200g, 453 grams in a pound, 80¢-$3.00/lb depending on volume and rice quality.
Even at the lowest estimates, ramen is cheaper, and thats not even includimg seasonings (included in ramen).
180/453 =39.7%
39.7% of 80¢ is 32¢ just for one cup of rice, not even including beans.
Problem is that ramen won't make you satiated in the long run (especially not eating it multiple times a day), and energy loss, mood changes, and ketosis can all occur as a result of poor nutrition. Much better in the long run to buy frozen veggies (broccoli, green beans, etc) as cheap nutritive complements to your meals (rice/beans/ramen in rotation is good and cheap). Also bananas and oats/oatmeal for mornings (usually under $1/lb for bananas) and you'll be hitting most of your nutritional needs for a really cheap daily price. Beans/legumes are a great source of protein, ramen/rice/oatmeal fill your req grains (esp. Brown rice), bananas for fruit, frozen dark green veggies. All that's left is dairy or some sort or calcium alternative and you have an economical way to survive college while sustaining energy and a decent diet.
