I used to think of myself as that shy person when it came to anything that was going on, but as of recently, I've found it easier to talk to anyone about anything. I'm not quite as of an introvert as I used to be. Like awein said, the internet partially extends into your life.
As far as IRL v. online -- in real life, I don't mind being a conversation starter if the person I'm talking to has a common interest but has a hard time feeling their way to chatting it up. I won't really approach a random person and start a conversation if they seem like they are rude/aggressive/completely uninterested. I'm also a (little) bit more blunt online than I am IRL in serious discussions, but get me engaged enough and I'll be pretty relentless in certain thoughts.
