It's really easy to use, but it's for Windows only, booo......

Remapping keys like what you do should work.
I am using a PS/2 keyboard and I can't press 3 or 4 arrow at a time.
I ended up remapping keys for FFR, and assigned it D, F, J, K.

Mapping Keys in Linux

I am also a Linux user and it is also on laptop. I use Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn but it should be the same.
First you need to know what key you want to remap. I want to map these:
