if you've never watched anime before I recommend watching either Death Note or Code Geass season 1 & 2 first, and then the opposite 2nd, because those 2 are highly regarded as the best there have ever been. I would then watch Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood for 3rd. These 3 are pretty much the fighting forces for the best.

After that imo everything from Steins;Gate, Hellsing Ultimate, kill la kill, to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and everything else starts to trickle in.

Yea Code Geass is still my favorite and is still the first I thing I recommend to people.

Zankyou no Terror is a quickie I liked too, from the maker of Cowboy Bebop.

oh, oh, if you're into comedy, school rumble and daily lives of highschool boys. for school rumble, its one of the few animes out there where the english dub is actually good (frikin priceless voice actors, they did a great job choosing people for that one). also, the devil is a part timer is a good one too. :)

Have you watched Death Note? It's currently on Netflix, English subbed. It gets a little boring after episode 25 or so but it's still really good.

I haven't seen too much anime, but 5cm per second (already mentioned) is really nice if you can tolerate a lot of sentimentality. It's not for everyone but if you're a forgiving viewer it's actually really nice.

Haibane Renmei is a really amazing, 13-episode series. It starts off somewhat slow, but it's a tremendously rewarding experience
