Think outside the box?

Another random thought, when you here the phrase " Think outside the box " what does it really mean? Are they refering to your house/condo/apartment etc or are they thinking of a box that you get your refrigerators in (the same kind some homeless people live in). But is there even a box in the first place? So when you hear think outside the box anything that you think already is outside the box. Its a very confusing expression if you think about it, the guy who made that phrase should've thought outside the box before he made that one up.

  1. well...on a psychological standpoint: the "box" referrs to the mental limits [or mental horizon] that we as humans place on ourselves. this seems to occur because of influence of society and laws, and sometimes just inner fear or shame.
i cant really think of a good example due to my severe exhaustion [spelling error] but also due to me nto paying enough attention in psych class. so...yea... m/
